Essex has over seventy museums, from small community museums to those with collections of national and international importance, and you can use the Essex Record Office (ERO) collections to research the history of your family, house or community.
The Essex Record Office, which is located in Chelmsford, preserves the written, oral and visual heritage of the county to ensure that the information remains available to both present and future generations. The Museums Advisory Service, in partnership with the Museums in Essex Committee, provides advice, training and co-ordinates countywide projects for Essex museums
If you are interested in tracing your family history this section will give you information about how to use the resources available to you and gives you practical advice on how to research your family in Essex.
The main sources of information at the Essex Record Office which you are likely to find useful are parish registers, census returns, wills, records of electors and taxpayers, poor law records and family and estate records.
