Northampton is famed for shoe manufacture because it had the cows, oak woods for tanning material and clay subsoil for tanning, and situated in a central position in England, it was a natural place for distribution.
The town sold King John a pair of riding boots for 9d and in 1266, on the orders of Henry III, provided 150 pairs of shoes for the poor, half at 4d a pair and half at 5d a pair.
The city was an important settlement of the Angles and of the Danes, and its Norman castle was the scene of sieges as well as parliaments from the 12th to the 14th century.
In 1675 much of the town was destroyed by fire.
